Hawker 400XP: The Heir That Lost the Crown
When "Improvement" Became Compromise
In 2003, Raytheon (Beechcraft's parent) introduced the Hawker 400XP - the successor to the beloved Beechjet 400A. The pitch: 200 pounds more maximum takeoff weight, seating for up to 9 passengers, and "enhanced" luxury features. But it came with costs: higher fuel burn, longer takeoff distances, and reduced payload with full fuel. The "enhanced" interior added weight without adding functionality.

What do you actually want to do with it?
If the answer is regional business travel, a few people on board, short notice departures and getting home the same day, the Hawker 400XP deserves a look.
It is a fast light jet.
• Range: 3,135 km (1,519 nm) - similar to 400A, but requiring more fuel.
• Speed: 833 km/h (450 knots) - slower than the 400A despite newer engines.
• Operating cost: Higher than predecessor due to complexity.
• Market value: $2.0 million average - higher acquisition cost, lower desirability.
Average days on market: 290 days - more than twice as long as the 400A.

If you are looking at a Hawker 400XP for sale, there are several aircraft I would put on the comparison list.
Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 / Range: 2,040 nm / Passengers: up to 9.
The CJ3 is the obvious step toward a newer generation of light jet. Its published range is substantially greater than the 400XP, and the current CJ3 Gen3 has Garmin G3000 avionics, autothrottles and Emergency Autoland.
Embraer Phenom 300E / Range: 2,010 nm / Passengers: up to 10.
The Phenom 300E is faster and has considerably more range. Embraer publishes 464 kt high-speed cruise, 2,010 nm range with five occupants under its stated assumptions, and a maximum operating altitude of 45,000 ft.
HondaJet Elite II / Range: 1,547 nm / Passengers: typically 5 to 6, depending on crew arrangement.
The HondaJet is a different generation of very light jet, with a published NBAA IFR range of 1,547 nm and maximum cruise speed of 422 kt.
So why would anyone still look at a 400XP?
Because the newest airplane is not automatically the best airplane for every owner.
If your mission is inside the 400XP's useful envelope, the conversation becomes much more interesting.
