When "Impossible" Became "Standard"
The Pilatus PC-24 for sale shouldn't be able to do what it does. A business jet that lands on grass, gravel, and dirt? That operates from runways as short as 893 meters? That carries 11 passengers with a pallet-sized cargo door? Swiss engineers looked at the laws of physics and said, "We'll take the challenge".

Introduced in 2018, the PC-24 created an entirely new category: the "Super Versatile Jet". Not a marketing term — an aviation reality. This is the only business jet certified for operations on unpaved surfaces, opening access to 21,000 airports worldwide, including 4,000 more than comparable light jets.

The PC-24 was built around the runway.

This is probably the single most important thing to understand before looking at a Pilatus PC-24 for sale.
The rough-field capability was not added after the aircraft was designed. Pilatus developed the PC-24 from the beginning with short and unpaved runway operations in mind. The aircraft uses a dual-wheel main landing gear with low-pressure tyres, and Pilatus specifically designed the wing and high-lift system around short-field performance.

The certification history is even more interesting.
The PC-24 received EASA and FAA type certification on 7 December 2017. The first customer aircraft was delivered in February 2018.

Then Pilatus went after something most business-jet manufacturers simply do not build their aircraft around.

Unpaved runways.
Dry sand and gravel operations were certified in 2018. The following test campaign covered grass, wet earth and snow. Pilatus carried out the testing in places including Goodwood, Duxford, Kunovice, Poitiers, Woodbridge and Kuujjuaq in Canada. The aircraft was tested on wet grass, wet dirt and snow-covered gravel, including abnormal and engine-out test conditions.
That is not a line I would put into a sales brochure just because it sounds good.
It is useful operational information.

893 metres. Read that number carefully.

There are two sets of performance numbers you will see in PC-24 material, depending on the aircraft standard and publication date.
Earlier published PC-24 performance data lists a 893 m balanced field length at MTOW, sea level and on a dry paved runway, with a 724 m landing distance over a 50 ft obstacle.
The current Pilatus specification gives a 940 m take-off distance and 734 m landing distance over a 50 ft obstacle for the newer configuration.
The Engineering That Broke Rules
• Range: 3,704 km (2,000 nm) - London to Moscow, New York to Denver.
• Speed: 815 km/h (440 knots) - matching pure jets while outperforming them.
• Takeoff: 893 m (2,930 ft) - shorter than many turboprops.
• Landing: 724 m (2,410 ft) - on grass, gravel, or paved surfaces.
• Payload: 1,314 lbs with full fuel - best in class.

The PC-24 is not a slow utility aircraft that happens to have jet engines.
Its two Williams International FJ44-4A engines produce 3,420 lbf of continuous thrust each, and Pilatus publishes a maximum cruise speed of 440 KTAS. Maximum certified altitude is 45,000 ft.
The current published climb data is also respectable for this class: approximately 3,960 ft/min at MTOW at sea level, with a direct climb to FL450 published at about 27.1 minutes under the manufacturer's stated conditions.
Three PC-24 facts most buyers should know
  • The first prototype flew in May 2015.
Pilatus then completed the EASA and FAA certification programme in December 2017. The first customer delivery followed in February 2018.
  • The PC-24 was tested on real rough-field surfaces, not just simulated conditions.
The certification programme included grass, wet dirt and snow, with testing conducted in several countries. Pilatus also performed engine-out and other abnormal-condition tests on grass.
  • The aircraft has a feature you rarely associate with a business jet: a proper cargo door.
The standard aft door is approximately 1.25 × 1.30 metres. It is one of the defining practical features of the PC-24 and a major reason for its usefulness in cargo and special-mission operations.

The PC-24's flat-floor cabin (1.69 m width, 1.55 m height) can be reconfigured in minutes. Remove seats to carry cargo. Add the 6'6" divan that converts to a bed. Configure for air ambulance missions. This isn't a business jet - it's a flying Swiss Army knife.

ACE avionics (Advanced Cockpit Environment) by Honeywell enables single-pilot operation with synthetic vision, graphical flight planning, and autothrottles.

A cabin designed around the mission.

The current PC-24 has 498 cubic feet, or 14.10 cubic metres, of total cabin volume, according to Pilatus.
It can accommodate up to 11 passengers and one pilot, depending on configuration. The cabin can also be adapted for different missions rather than being locked into one permanent executive layout.
This is one reason the aircraft has found work outside normal corporate travel.
Pilatus designed the PC-24 for executive transport, passenger operations, medevac and special missions. The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia took delivery of the first PC-24 with a medevac interior in November 2018.
Think about that for a moment.
An aircraft that can be an executive jet on Monday and a specialised medical aircraft in another configuration is telling you something about the basic architecture of the airplane.
It was designed to be changed.

Then there is the cargo door.

This is one of those features that sounds slightly strange until you have tried loading a business jet with something that was not designed to fit through a business-jet cabin door.
The PC-24 has a standard aft cargo door measuring approximately 1.25 × 1.30 metres, or roughly 4 ft 1 in by 4 ft 3 in.
Pilatus describes it as the first business jet with a standard pallet-sized cargo door.
That is useful for luggage.
It is even more useful for bulky luggage.
Golf equipment. Skis. Bicycles. Specialist equipment. Medical equipment. Commercial cargo.
Things that become a problem in other light jets can become a straightforward loading exercise in the PC-24.
The baggage compartment itself provides 90 cubic feet, or 2.50 cubic metres, of internal, pressurised baggage space.
And the cabin has a continuous flat floor.
That detail matters more than it sounds.

There is no shortage of good light jets.

The Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 is faster, with a published maximum cruise speed around 451 KTAS, and has a published range of approximately 2,165 NM. It is a very capable conventional light jet.

The HondaJet Elite II publishes 422 KTAS and 1,547 NM NBAA IFR range with four occupants. It is smaller, efficient and aimed at a different mission profile.

The Embraer Phenom 300E is another obvious aircraft to consider. It offers strong speed and range in the light-jet segment.
The Verdict
The Pilatus PC-24 is the aircraft that makes you question everything you thought you knew about business aviation. It goes where jets can't go, carries what jets can't carry, and lands where jets can't land.
