Cessna Citation M2 Gen2: The Entry-Level Jet That Grew Up
The Mustang's Worthy Successor
When Cessna ended Citation Mustang production in 2017, the light jet market lost its favorite entry-level aircraft. The Citation M2, introduced in 2011, wasn't just a replacement - it was an evolution. The M2 Gen2, unveiled in 2022, proved that "entry - level" no longer means "compromise". This is the aircraft that bridges the gap between the discontinued Mustang and the larger CJ family. It carries the Citation legacy forward with modern touches that owner - operators demand.

The Gen2 Transformation

The M2 Gen2 brought premium interior design to the lightest Citation: ambient lighting, illuminated cupholders, wireless charging, USB-A and USB-C at every seat. The side-facing seat now folds to accommodate 50 lbs of cargo. The cockpit gained three inches of legroom and a proper co-pilot position.
Specifications That Impress
• Range: 2,870 km (1,550 nm): Miami to New York with reserves
• Speed: 750 km/h (404 knots): faster than the Mustang, matching Phenom 100
• Capacity: 7 - 8 passengers in a cabin that respects their presence
• Takeoff: 3,210 ft - access to airports that limit competitors
• Engines: Two Williams FJ44-1AP-21 with 1,965 lbf thrust each

Four interior themes - Mist, Cashmere, Driftwood, Ebony - transform the cabin from utilitarian to executive.

The Gen3 Revolution Coming

In 2024, Textron announced the M2 Gen3 with Garmin Emergency Autoland and autothrottles - features previously reserved for much larger jets. First delivery: 2027. The M2 that was already capable will soon land itself if the pilot becomes incapacitated.
Three things about the M2 Gen2 worth knowing
  • It can work from a 3,210 ft runway.
That number gets interesting when your destination is an airport where a larger jet simply becomes inconvenient. Cessna publishes the figure for sea level, standard-day conditions at MTOW, so actual runway performance still has to be calculated for the airport, temperature, weight and runway condition.
  • It gets to FL410 in about 24 minutes.
For a light jet, that gives you a useful operating ceiling and gets you above a good deal of the weather and traffic that can make lower-level flying less pleasant. Textron publishes the 41,000 ft ceiling and approximately 24-minute climb time.
  • The M2 family is moving toward a very different cockpit.
The M2 Gen3, currently in flight test, brings Garmin Emergency Autoland, standard autothrottles and updated G3000 avionics. Textron expects the M2 Gen3 to enter service in 2027. Emergency Autoland is designed to stabilize the aircraft, assess the situation, communicate with ATC and fly an automated landing if the pilot becomes incapacitated.

That does not make the Gen2 obsolete.
Quite the opposite. For a buyer looking at an M2 Gen2 for sale today, it is worth understanding exactly where the model sits in the Citation development line and choosing the aircraft based on mission, equipment and delivery condition.
Eclipse 500 competitors
Embraer Phenom 100EX / Range: 1,178 nm / Passengers: up to 7.
The Phenom 100EX is slightly slower on paper at 406 kt versus the M2's 404 kt, but its published range is 1,178 nm with four occupants and NBAA IFR reserves.

HondaJet Elite II / Range: 1,547 nm / Passengers: up to 7.
The HondaJet Elite II is the more obvious performance rival. Honda publishes 1,547 nm NBAA IFR range, 422 KTAS maximum cruise speed and configurations for up to seven passengers.

Cessna Citation M2 Gen2 / Range: 1,550 nm / Passengers: up to 7.
So why look at an M2 Gen2 jet for sale?

Because aircraft selection is rarely about one headline number. Airport access, cockpit familiarity, maintenance status, engine programs, avionics, interior condition, records and the actual mission can easily matter more than a few knots on the cruise number.

That is where the right aircraft becomes interesting.
The Verdict
The Citation M2 Gen2 is a very sensible light jet for an owner who wants to fly rather than simply own an aircraft.

It has the range to cover a large number of regional business missions, the performance to use smaller airports, a cockpit built around Garmin G3000 avionics and a cabin that no longer feels like an afterthought.

And there is another point I would make as a pilot: the M2 is a straightforward airplane to understand.

That counts.

If you are comparing an aircraft for sale, looking at an M2 Gen2 price, checking M2 Gen2 specs, or simply deciding whether this jet fits your operation, start with the mission.
