CESSNA CITATION XLS+
Cessna Citation XLS+: The Final Evolution
The 2008 Swan Song
In 2008, Cessna introduced the Citation XLS+ - the final evolution of the Excel/XLS lineage. The upgrades were incremental but meaningful: PW545C engines with 5% more thrust, Collins Pro Line 21 avionics, and a cabin that finally felt premium.

Production ended in 2021 with over 1,000 Excel/XLS/XLS+ aircraft delivered - the most successful mid-size jet family in history.
Specifications That Closed the Chapter
• Range: 3,889 km (2,100 nm) — the longest of the series
• Speed: 798 km/h (431 knots) — matching the XLS
• Capacity: 7 – 9 passengers in the refined cabin
• Engines: PW545C (4,119 lbf) — more thrust, better hot-and-high
• Avionics: Pro Line 21 with four LCD displays

The XLS+ was the Excel perfected — the aircraft that took a "good enough" platform and made it genuinely excellent.

And then there is the runway.

The XLS+ can operate from a takeoff field length as short as about 3,560 ft under the published conditions. It can climb to FL450 in roughly 29 minutes. That is useful in the real world because your departure airport is not always a big international field with five kilometres of concrete in front of you.

That is one of the reasons I would look at an XLS+ before simply chasing a faster aircraft.
Three things worth knowing about the XLS+
  • More than 1,000 aircraft in the 560XL family
In March 2021, Textron Aviation delivered the 1,000th aircraft in the Excel/XLS/XLS+ family. That is a serious operating history, not a niche aircraft with a small fleet.
  • The XLS+ has the short-field manners many buyers actually need
The published takeoff field length is around 3,560 ft, while the aircraft can reach FL450. For owners using secondary airports, that combination can be more valuable than another few knots of cruise speed.
  • The XLS+ kept the cabin people liked about the Excel
The stand-up cabin is approximately 5 ft 8 in high and 5 ft 6 in wide, with seating for up to nine passengers depending on configuration. The XLS+ also has external baggage capacity, so passengers do not have to compete with their luggage for cabin space.

That last point sounds mundane. It isn't. Spend enough time on business jets and you learn that cabin usability beats brochure glamour surprisingly often.
Cessna Citation XLS+ competitors
The obvious alternatives include the Bombardier Learjet 60XR, with typical seating for 7 and published range around 2,292 nm, and the Hawker 800XP, typically configured for 8 passengers with range around 2,400 to 2,540 nm depending on the operating assumptions.
The Embraer Phenom 300 is another aircraft buyers often consider. It typically carries 7 passengers with 4 passengers and crew in its standard configuration and has a published NBAA IFR range around 1,936 nm.
The choice is really about the mission.
If you want the XLS+ for sale because you need a combination of cabin space, short-field capability, familiar Citation operating characteristics and a large installed fleet, this aircraft makes a very strong case.
The Verdict
The Citation XLS+ is the aircraft that proves evolution can be revolutionary. It took 25 years of Excel development and distilled it into the definitive mid-size jet.

The Citation XLS+ is the kind of aircraft that makes more sense the longer you operate it.

It has a proven fleet behind it, a mature maintenance and support environment, a useful cabin, strong airport performance and a cockpit that was a meaningful step forward from the earlier Excel/XLS models. Textron's 1,000th 560XL delivery in 2021 tells you how widely the basic platform has been accepted.
