The Gulfstream G400 was unveiled on October 4, 2021, alongside the G800. Gulfstream positioned it between the G280 and the larger G500/G600, with a planned role as its entry point into the large-cabin segment. The launch price was announced at $34.5 million before options.

One detail is important for anyone researching the aircraft today. The G400 was not introduced in 2022, and it did not enter service in 2023. The first flight took place on August 15, 2024, almost three years after the launch.

As of mid-2026, the Gulfstream G400 remained in the flight-test and certification program. Gulfstream continues to list the aircraft with preliminary performance data that remains subject to change.

• The 4,200 nm number has conditions.

It is a theoretical NBAA IFR range using eight passengers, three crew and reserves at Mach 0.85. Weather, routing, speed and aircraft equipment can change the result. Gulfstream says so directly. I would use 4,200 nm as the published planning reference, not as a promise that every eight-passenger mission will cover that distance.

• The G400 is a large-cabin aircraft, not a conventional midsize jet.

Its 1,441-cubic-foot cabin is much larger than aircraft such as the Challenger 3500 and Citation Longitude. That difference becomes obvious when the mission includes several passengers, work areas and luggage.

• Certification status matters today.

The FAA has issued special conditions for the GVII-G400, including requirements covering its automatic speed protection and inflatable lapbelt seating. Those actions are part of the certification process. They are not the same thing as a completed type certification.

Bombardier Challenger 3500 for sale / Range: 3,400 nm under Bombardier's published NBAA IFR conditions / Passengers: 9 standard, 10 maximum.
The Challenger 3500 is smaller and lighter. Its advantage is a proven super-midsize platform with a 4,835 ft published takeoff distance and Mach 0.83 operating limit. The G400 goes farther and gives you a much larger cabin, while the Challenger remains a sensible choice when the mission does not require the extra size.

Dassault Falcon 2000LXS for sale / Range: 4,000 nm with eight passengers and NBAA IFR reserves / Passengers: 8 to 10.
This is one of the closest comparisons. The Falcon has a 7 ft 8 in wide cabin and strong short-field numbers, including a published 4,675 ft takeoff distance. Its cabin is much shorter than the G400's 36 ft 4 in, so the decision comes down partly to cabin space versus airport performance and the mature Falcon platform.

Embraer Praetor 600 for sale / Range: 4,018 nm with four passengers and NBAA IFR reserves / Passengers: 8 to 12, depending on configuration.
The Praetor 600 is the serious super-midsize alternative. It has a six-foot-tall flat-floor cabin and full fly-by-wire flight controls. Its range is close to the G400's published number, but the G400 moves into a larger cabin class.

Cessna Citation Longitude for sale / Range: 3,500 nm with four passengers / Passengers: up to 12.
The Longitude is considerably smaller inside, with a 25 ft 2 in cabin length and 77 in width. Its Garmin G5000 flight deck and 483-knot maximum cruise speed make it a strong super-midsize option, but it does not match the G400's published range or cabin volume.

Bombardier Challenger 650 for sale / Published range: roughly 4,000 nm, depending on the operating assumptions / Passengers: typically around 9, with higher-density configurations available.
The Challenger 650 remains relevant because it combines a wide 95-in cabin with a mature platform. The G400 has a similar mission range on paper but brings a longer cabin, newer engines and the Symmetry Flight Deck. The Challenger 650 is the more established aircraft; the G400 is the newer design.

The Gulfstream G400 is best understood as Gulfstream's entry-level large-cabin jet, with a published 4,200 nm range and technology derived from the newer GVII family. Its biggest advantage is the space it puts around that range number. The cabin is substantially larger than the Challenger 3500, Praetor 600 and Citation Longitude, while the aircraft remains shorter-range and less expensive than the larger Gulfstreams were designed to be.
