Gulfstream G650 for Sale: 7,000 nm, Mach 0.925 and the Jet That Changed the Long-Range Market
The 2012 Game-Changer
Gulfstream announced the G650 on March 13, 2008. This was a clean-sheet design, not another development of the earlier Gulfstream airframes. It was built around a simple target: carry a large cabin across oceans at speeds approaching Mach 1.

The first flight took place on November 25, 2009. FAA type certification followed on September 7, 2012, with EASA certification arriving on December 21 of the same year. The first G650 entered service in December 2012.

Gulfstream continued the certification programme after the accident and eventually produced an aircraft with a published 7,000 nm range at Mach 0.85 and a maximum operating Mach number of 0.925. The G650 also became the company's first clean-sheet business jet and its first Gulfstream to use full fly-by-wire flight controls.

That combination is what made the G650 different from the beginning.
Specifications That Defined an Era
  • Range: 7,000 nm at Mach 0.85 with eight passengers, four crew and NBAA IFR reserves.

The original G650 also has a lower MTOW and smaller fuel capacity than the G650ER. The standard G650 is limited to 99,600 lb MTOW and 44,200 lb of fuel, while the ER was increased to 103,600 lb and 48,200 lb respectively. Those are G650ER figures and should not be transferred to the standard G650.
Three Things Worth Knowing
  • The 7,000 nm figure came after the aircraft had already flown.
Gulfstream initially targeted less. Flight testing gave the company enough performance margin to raise the published range to 7,000 nm at Mach 0.85 and later to 6,000 nm at Mach 0.90. During testing, the aircraft also completed a 5,000 nm closed circuit at Mach 0.90 in 9 hours and 45 minutes.

  • The BR725 is a major part of the G650 story.
Rolls-Royce developed the BR725 specifically as the G650's exclusive engine. The production engine has 16,900 lb of takeoff thrust and incorporates technology from the BR700 and Trent families. Rolls-Royce also introduced automatic Engine Health Monitoring on the BR725-powered G650.

  • The aircraft is finished, but the platform is not standing still.
Production of the G650 family ended in February 2025, with the G800 taking over Gulfstream's next-generation ultra-long-range role. The existing fleet continues to receive avionics and connectivity upgrades. Honeywell's Primus Epic Block 3, for example, adds updated graphics, synthetic vision improvements, airport moving maps, ADS-B In features, predictive landing performance and other functions to eligible G650/G650ER aircraft.

Bombardier Global 7500 for sale / Range: 7,700 nm / Passengers: Up to 19.
This is the direct comparison when the mission pushes toward the longest possible nonstop sectors. The Global 7500 has a published 7,700 nm range and a four-zone cabin concept. Its advantage is the extra range and newer cabin architecture. The G650 counters with a maximum operating Mach number of 0.925 and a very established pre-owned fleet.
If the mission regularly sits near the edge of the G650's range, the Global 7500 deserves serious attention.

Bombardier Global 6500 for sale / Range: 6,600 nm / Passengers: Up to 17.
The Global 6500 is closer to the G650 in overall mission than its smaller dimensions might suggest. Bombardier publishes 6,600 nm with NBAA IFR reserves, eight passengers and four crew at Mach 0.85. It uses Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engines and Bombardier's Vision flight deck.
The G650 gives the buyer more cabin length and width, plus another 400 nm of published range at long-range cruise.

Dassault Falcon 8X for sale / Range: 6,450 nm / Passengers: Up to 16.
The Falcon 8X approaches the mission from a different direction. It is a three-engine aircraft with a published 6,450 nm range, and its design puts considerable emphasis on airport access and operational flexibility. The G650 is the larger, faster machine for the buyer who prioritizes cabin size and long-range speed.

Gulfstream G600 for sale / Range: 6,600 nm / Passengers: Up to 19.
The G600 is a particularly useful internal comparison. It retains the 51,000 ft ceiling and Mach 0.925 maximum operating speed, but its published range is 6,600 nm. It also brings the newer Gulfstream Symmetry Flight Deck and Pratt & Whitney PW815GA engines.
If 6,600 nm is enough for the mission, the G600 can make a strong case through newer architecture. If the extra 400 nm of G650 range matters regularly, the older flagship starts to look more attractive.

Gulfstream G700 for sale / Range: 7,750 nm / Passengers: Up to 19.
The G700 is the modern Gulfstream answer to the G650 concept. It publishes 7,750 nm at Mach 0.85 and Mach 0.935 maximum operating speed, with the Symmetry Flight Deck and a larger, more flexible cabin architecture.
The G700 wins on generation. The G650's argument is different: a proven ultra-long-range platform with 7,000 nm published range that can now be acquired on the pre-owned market, with upgrades available for the systems that have aged.
Where This Aircraft Makes Sense
Take a straightforward mission: eight passengers, four crew and a long intercontinental sector. Under Gulfstream's published assumptions, 7,000 nm is the theoretical range at Mach 0.85. At Mach 0.90, the published range falls to 6,000 nm.

That gives the G650 a useful combination of reach and speed for operators who regularly connect North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Speed is part of the equation. Mach 0.90 is not simply a brochure number when the aircraft is being used for long sectors. Gulfstream's own testing included a Burbank to Savannah flight of more than 1,900 miles in 3 hours 26 minutes, with cruise speeds between Mach 0.91 and 0.92 and a short segment at Mach 0.925.

For shorter regional missions, the picture changes. A large 99,600 lb aircraft with two BR725 engines and a 2,138 cu ft cabin is a lot of airplane for a routine 1,000 to 1,500 nm trip.

The G650 earns its place when the mission regularly demands what it was designed to do: long sectors, high cruise speed, substantial cabin space and the ability to keep flying when a smaller aircraft would be looking for a fuel stop.
The Verdict
The G650 was built around three numbers: 7,000 nm, Mach 0.925 and a cabin more than eight feet wide. Those numbers still explain why the aircraft deserves attention.

Its strongest competitive advantage is the combination rather than any single specification. The Global 7500 goes farther. The G700 is newer. The Falcon 8X gives a buyer a different approach to airport flexibility. The G600 brings newer Gulfstream systems.

But the G650 still gives the buyer 7,000 nm of published range at Mach 0.85, 6,000 nm at Mach 0.90, a 51,000 ft ceiling and one of the largest cabins in the pre-owned ultra-long-range market.

For the right intercontinental mission, that remains a serious proposition. The acquisition decision should then move immediately to the individual aircraft: engine programme, maintenance status, avionics upgrades, cabin configuration, connectivity and records.
