CESSNA CITATION X / X+
Cessna Citation X / X+: The Speed Demon's Last Stand
The 1996 Rocket That Outran Physics
When the Citation X entered service in 1996, Cessna had produced something unusual for a midsize business jet: an aircraft designed around high-speed cruise. The later Citation X+ pushed that idea further, reaching a certified maximum operating speed of Mach 0.935, or 536 ktas. The FAA verified that figure during certification testing, and Cessna described the aircraft as the fastest civilian aircraft in the world at the time.

Speed is useful when it changes the mission.
If you regularly fly long business sectors, a faster cruise can mean less time airborne and more usable time at the other end. Cessna itself highlighted missions such as New York to Los Angeles in about four hours in the Citation X+, depending on conditions and routing.

Specifications That Broke Records
• Range: 6,408 km (3,460 nm): transcontinental at Mach 0.90
• Speed: Mach 0.935 maximum: 1,078 km/h (583 knots) cruise
• Capacity: 8 - 12 passengers in the long, sleek cabin
• Engines: Rolls-Royce AE3007C (X) or AE3007C2 (X+) - 7,034 lbf, afterburner-like power
• Ceiling: 51,000 ft - above commercial traffic, above weather

The X+ (2012) added winglets, Garmin G5000 avionics, and Mach 0.935 capability - officially the fastest business jet until the G650 arrived. Production ended in 2018, but the legend continues.
Three facts worth knowing
  • Mach 0.935 is not a marketing number.
The FAA formally verified the Citation X's maximum operating speed during certification testing. That is 536 ktas at maximum operating speed.
  • The X+ can operate at 51,000 ft.
That gives the crew access to flight levels above most commercial traffic and can provide useful flexibility around weather and routing, subject of course to ATC clearance, aircraft weight and actual conditions.
  • The X+ set certified speed records.
One recognized record flight averaged just under 606 mph at 39,000 ft between Seattle and Wichita. The National Aeronautic Association certified the achievement, and the Federation Aeronautique Internationale later certified the flights as world records.

Those are the kinds of numbers that make an experienced pilot stop and look twice.
Cessna Citation X / X+ competitors
The Citation X/X+ sits in an interesting part of the market because several aircraft can offer more cabin space or comparable range, but very few offer the same emphasis on speed.

Cessna Citation Longitude: 3,500 nm range, up to 12 passengers. A newer super-midsize option with a larger cabin and 483 ktas maximum cruise speed.

Bombardier Challenger 3500: 3,400 nm range, up to 10 passengers. A strong alternative when cabin comfort and a newer platform matter more than outright speed.

Gulfstream G280: 3,600 nm range, up to 10 passengers. It offers slightly more range and a different cabin and operational philosophy, with high-speed cruise around Mach 0.84.

So if your priority is maximum cabin volume, there are other answers.
If your priority is covering the mission quickly, the Citation X/X+ remains a very different proposition.
The Verdict
The Citation X/X+ is not for someone who simply wants another business jet.

It makes sense for an owner who looks at a flight plan and thinks, How quickly can we get there?

The Citation X was designed around that question.

The X+ refined the formula with higher-speed capability, winglets, updated avionics, more cabin length and a 51,000 ft maximum operating altitude.

And yes, there are newer aircraft.

There are also larger cabins.

But if you want a jet for sale with a very particular character, and speed is genuinely part of your mission, the Citation X/X+ deserves a serious look.
