In 1996, Dassault introduced the 50EX with TFE731-40 engines (3,704 lbf), Collins Pro Line 4 avionics, and 7% better fuel efficiency. The EX could reach FL410 in 23 minutes and fly 6,050 km (3,260 nm) - 400 nm farther than the original.

Production ended in 2008 with 100 EXs and 252 original 50s delivered.

  • It was Dassault's first transoceanic Falcon.
The aircraft was designed specifically around a roughly 3,400 nm North Atlantic mission with transport-category reserves. That was a serious requirement for a business jet in the 1970s.

Falcon 50EX: The Version I Would Look At First
If I were evaluating a Falcon 50 today, I would pay very close attention to the 50EX.
The reason is straightforward. The EX kept the basic Falcon 50 airframe and its three-engine layout, then added more modern engines, improved performance and updated avionics.
The TFE731-40 engines brought more thrust and better specific fuel consumption than the earlier installation. The aircraft also received Collins Pro Line 4 avionics.
On paper, those changes look technical.
In ownership, they matter.
The condition of the engines, maintenance history, avionics configuration, inspection status and previous operation can make a much bigger difference to the value of an individual aircraft than the badge on the tail.
That is why I would never tell a buyer simply, "Buy a Falcon 50EX."
I would say: let's find the right one.
Where the Falcon 50 Still Makes Sense
The Falcon 50 makes the most sense for an owner who values range and cabin space but does not need the size of a modern large-cabin aircraft.
Think about missions where you want to carry a small group comfortably, fly long sectors and keep the aircraft relatively compact.
That could mean European to Middle Eastern missions, North Atlantic operations, or long domestic and regional sectors where nonstop capability saves a meaningful amount of time.
Of course, actual range depends on payload, weather, routing, reserves and aircraft configuration. A published range number is a planning reference, not a promise that the airplane will fly every route nonstop with any payload.
Pilots know this.
Buyers should too.

The Falcon 50 sits in a market where buyers may also consider aircraft such as the Gulfstream G300, Cessna Citation Longitude and other super-midsize or long-range pre-owned jets, depending on mission and budget.

The Falcon 50 is one of those aircraft that makes more sense when you understand why it was built.

It was designed for long-range work. It introduced a supercritical wing to civil aviation. It brought Dassault's three-engine philosophy into the transoceanic business jet market.

And after all these years, the basic idea still holds up.

Would I buy just any Falcon 50?
Would I seriously consider the right Falcon 50EX with strong records, good engine status, sensible maintenance history and an avionics package suited to the intended operation?

Absolutely.

That is the difference between buying an old jet and buying the right aircraft.
