Embraer Phenom 100: The Brazilian Invasion
From Regional Jets to Personal Jets
When Embraer announced a very light business jet, it was a serious move into a market already occupied by Cessna, Eclipse and other established names. The Phenom 100 entered service in 2008 and quickly found a place with owner-pilots, private companies and flight schools. By 2023, Embraer reported more than 400 Phenom 100 aircraft in operation worldwide.

The idea was straightforward. Build a small jet around a proper business aircraft cabin and cockpit rather than making the cabin feel like an afterthought.

That basic idea still defines the Phenom 100.

The family has moved through the original Phenom 100, the 100E, the 100EV and now the 100EX. The 100EV brought more powerful PW617F1-E engines and improved avionics, while the 100EX, introduced in 2023, moved the aircraft to Prodigy Touch avionics, added ROAAS and revised the cabin.

Performance Across Generations
  • Range: 1,178 nm / 2,182 km for four occupants with NBAA IFR reserves and a 100 nm alternate on the current 100EX specification.
  • High-speed cruise: 406 kt / 752 km/h.
  • Maximum operating altitude: 41,000 ft.
  • Maximum payload: 1,775 lb / 805 kg on the 100EX.
  • Cabin: 11 ft long, 5 ft 1 in wide and 4 ft 11 in high on the Phenom 100 family specification.
  • Engines: Two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW617F1-E engines on the 100EV and 100EX, rated at 1,730 lbf each.
The 100EX has a published takeoff distance of 3,190 ft at maximum takeoff weight, sea level and ISA conditions.
Those numbers need context. A 1,178 nm published range does not mean 1,178 nm on every trip with a full cabin and heavy bags. Payload, winds, temperature and reserves change the answer.
Three Things Worth Knowing
  • The cabin was a big part of the original idea
Embraer did not build the Phenom 100 around a tiny cabin and then try to make it look better with interior trim. The Oval Lite cross-section was designed to give the aircraft a comparatively wide and tall cabin for its class. The dimensions are still useful today: 5 ft 1 in wide and 4 ft 11 in high.
That is one reason the aircraft works well for short business trips where four people are traveling together.
  • The 100EX is a very different cockpit from the early aircraft
The latest aircraft uses Prodigy Touch avionics based on Garmin G3000 technology. Embraer also added FlightStream 510, stabilized approach functions, predictive windshear and automatic 3D scanning with lightning and hail prediction.
Then there is ROAAS, the Runway Overrun Awareness and Alerting System. Embraer describes the 100EX as the first aircraft in its class to feature the system.
Older Phenom 100s need to be judged on their actual avionics installation, not simply by the model name.
  • The used market shows why configuration matters
Current listings are a good example. Some aircraft are on CAMP, some have Pratt & Whitney ESP coverage, others show Embraer Executive Care or JSSI programs, and avionics can range from earlier installations to Garmin G1000 NXi upgrades.

The Mustang is probably the most natural comparison for an early Phenom 100. It is slightly slower and has a smaller cabin, but the concept is very similar: a compact twin-engine jet built around short regional missions. Current Textron pre-owned examples show Garmin G1000 avionics and four-passenger cabin layouts.

Cessna Citation M2 Gen2 for Sale / Range: 1,550 nm / Passengers: Up to 8 occupants.

The M2 moves the discussion toward more range and a slightly larger cabin. Its Williams FJ44 engines produce 1,965 lbf each, and the aircraft uses Garmin G3000 avionics with autothrottles.

If the mission regularly pushes beyond the Phenom's practical range, the M2 deserves a serious look.

HondaJet Elite II for Sale / Range: 1,547 nm with four occupants and NBAA IFR reserves / Passengers: Up to 7 passengers depending on configuration.

The HondaJet is the performance alternative. It cruises at 422 ktas, reaches 43,000 ft and has a much longer cabin at 17.8 ft. The Phenom counters with a simpler regional mission profile and a cabin that remains competitive for its size.
Where This Aircraft Makes Sense
The Phenom 100 is at its best on regional missions with a small group, especially when airport access and operating simplicity matter.
Think Helsinki to Stockholm, Paris to Geneva, or Moscow to a nearby European destination with four passengers rather than a long-haul mission with seven people and heavy baggage. The 1,178 nm published range gives useful regional capability, but a buyer should calculate the actual route with payload, weather and reserves before assuming a nonstop flight.
Four passengers is where the cabin and performance balance starts to look particularly good.
If your normal mission is 1,500 to 2,000 nm, though, I would look at a different class of aircraft. The Phenom 100 was designed as a regional VLJ, and the numbers tell you where its limits begin.
The Verdict
The Phenom 100 is a good fit for an owner who normally carries four people, flies regional routes and wants a real jet without moving into a larger light-jet platform.

The early aircraft can be attractive on the used market, but condition, avionics and engine program status can change the value calculation substantially. The 100EV and 100EX are more interesting if newer engines, cockpit technology and updated systems are important to the mission.
If your typical trip is four passengers and roughly 1,000 to 1,200 nm, the Phenom 100 deserves a place on the shortlist.
