The Hawker 850XP arrived in 2006 as the next development of the 800XP. The idea was simple. Keep the proven Hawker cabin and TFE731 engines, then improve the aerodynamics and cockpit.

Factory winglets were the visible change. Collins Pro Line 21 became the standard avionics suite, and the aircraft retained the 551 cu ft cabin of the 800 series. The certification basis specifically identifies the 850XP as an 800XP with Pro Line 21 avionics plus the changes required for the new model.

Production covered 2006 through 2009. Jetcraft's model history records 100 aircraft manufactured, while current market reports track a fleet of about 100 aircraft.

It was a short production run, but an important one. The 850XP sits between the 800XP and 900XP, giving buyers the winglet-equipped airframe without moving to the 900XP's TFE731-50BR engines. AOPA describes the family in exactly those terms: the 850XP added winglets and avionics to the 800XP, while the 900XP brought the engine upgrade.

Three Things Worth Knowing
  • The 850XP is the winglet - equipped development of the 800XP:
Hawker kept the proven 800XP airframe and added factory winglets and Collins Pro Line 21 avionics. The result was a straightforward upgrade with better aerodynamic performance and a more modern cockpit. For a buyer today, that combination is the main reason to consider an 850XP over an earlier 800XP.

  • The winglets add useful range:
Published Hawker data credits the winglets with roughly 100 nm of additional range, along with improved climb performance. It is a practical upgrade, especially on longer trips where every additional mile of range helps. The aircraft still retains the familiar 800-series cabin and two Honeywell TFE731-5BR engines.

  • The real advantage is the package:
You get the Hawker's 551 cu ft stand-up cabin, factory winglets and Pro Line 21 avionics in one aircraft. That combination gives the 850XP a clear place in the used midsize market: a comfortable eight-seat jet with useful range and a cockpit that is newer than the airframe itself. For a buyer comparing an 800XP with an 850XP, these are the differences worth paying attention to.

Citation XLS+ for Sale:
Range: 1,976 nm published maximum, with 1,528 nm listed at full seats / Passengers: 8 executive.
The XLS+ is smaller inside, with 422 cu ft of cabin volume versus 551 cu ft for the Hawker. Its advantage is a shorter published balanced field length of 3,910 ft. If airport access is more important than cabin volume, the Citation deserves a close look.

Citation Sovereign for Sale:
Range: 3,010 nm published, with 2,620 nm at full seats / Passengers: 9 executive.
This is the more capable range aircraft. The Sovereign also has a 25.25 ft cabin and 571 cu ft of volume, while its published balanced field length is only 3,750 ft. The trade is acquisition cost and a different ownership bracket.

Learjet 60XR for Sale:
Range: 2,398 nm / Passengers: 7 executive.
The Learjet is faster to climb, with a published 4,500 ft/min rate, but its cabin is only 447 cu ft and 17.67 ft long. The Hawker gives the buyer more cabin volume and an eight-seat executive configuration.

Gulfstream G150 for Sale:
Range: 3,130 nm published, 2,760 nm with full seats / Passengers: 7 executive.
The G150 has Pro Line 21 avionics and TFE731-40AR engines, but its cabin is shorter at 17.7 ft and narrower at 5.75 ft. It is the more modern design comparison, while the 850XP has the larger cabin.

Falcon 50EX for Sale:
Range: 3,388 nm / Passengers: 9 executive.
The Falcon 50EX is the range option here, with a 23.5 ft cabin and three TFE731-40 engines. That extra capability comes with a three-engine ownership profile, so it is a different proposition from the twin-engine Hawker.

Challenger 300 for Sale:
Range: 3,340 nm published, 3,065 nm with full seats / Passengers: 8 executive.
This is the step-up aircraft. The Challenger has a 930 cu ft cabin, 7.17 ft width and 23.7 ft length. It is substantially larger than the Hawker and moves the buyer into super-midsize territory.

Phenom 300E for Sale:
Range: 2,010 nm with five occupants / Passengers: up to 9 or 10 depending on configuration.
The Phenom is a much newer light jet concept with single-pilot capability, Garmin-based Prodigy Touch avionics and a 45,000 ft operating altitude. Its 2,010 nm range is shorter than the Hawker's published maximum, but its operating concept is very different.

The 850XP works best as a midsize cabin aircraft for roughly six to eight passengers and missions where 2,000 to 2,500 nm of useful range covers the normal operation.

Take a 2,200 nm trip with eight passengers. On paper, that sits inside the published 2,525 nm full-seat figure, but the actual dispatch calculation still depends on winds, temperature, routing, payload and required reserves.

Cabin space is where the Hawker earns its place. The 551 cu ft interior is substantially larger than a Citation XLS+, while the aircraft remains smaller than a Challenger 300.

Airport selection needs more attention. The published balanced field length is around 5,640 ft, so buyers who regularly use short or high-elevation airports should run actual performance numbers before making a decision.
The Verdict
The Hawker 850XP is the winglet version of the 800XP idea, with a substantially better cockpit and a useful aerodynamic improvement.

Its strongest point is still the cabin. Its biggest questions are the age of the airframe, engine status, maintenance position and the exact avionics installed on the aircraft you are considering.

For six to eight passengers and missions around 2,000 to 2,500 nm, it remains a credible used midsize jet. If the mission requires more range or shorter runways, the Sovereign, G150 or larger aircraft become more relevant.
